New regulations for the export of bamboo products to Australia

The Australian Animal and Plant Quarantine Bureau (AQIS) has recently issued new phytosanitary measures for imported bamboo and rattan willow products. The commonly used methyl bromide fumigation and disinfection and treatment will no longer be used for the detoxification treatment of bamboo and rattan products. The new regulations will formally come into effect on May 2, 2011, and stipulate that Australia will implement compulsory handling at the port or refuse entry into any entry products that violate the measure. According to the new regulations, all bamboo and rattan willow products exported to Australia must undergo heat treatment, kiln drying treatment, ethylene oxide vacuum fumigation or irradiation treatment, etc., in order to carry out harm removal treatment and issue a certificate of harm removal. The commonly used method of fumigation and detoxification of methyl bromide has been explicitly rejected.
