This innovative fabric lithium battery has an energy density of over 450 watt-hours per liter and is extremely soft, foldable to a radius of less than 1 mm, and its performance remains the same even after folding more than 1000 times. A typical bendable lithium battery can only be bent to a radius of about 25 mm and has a performance of only 200 watt-hours per liter. In addition, the fabric lithium battery developed by PolyU is light, less than 0.5 mm thick, and has a fast charging and discharging rate and a long battery life, which is comparable to that of a conventional lithium battery.

The PolyU research team used the company's patented polymer-assisted metal deposition method to uniformly deposit highly conductive metals, copper and nickel, onto treated fabrics, such as cotton and carbon cloth, to make conductive fabrics. A metal foil on the surface of a lithium battery to act as a current collector and improve softness.

The deformation test conducted by the team proves that the fabric lithium battery has high mechanical stability, durability and safety. The battery is not folded, folded at different angles, irregularly wrinkled, and its voltage performance is not damaged; continuous hammering Safety tests such as cutting and steel needle puncture have also proven that batteries provide a stable source of power for electronic components without the risk of fire or burst.

The research and development won the gold medal and two special merit awards at the 47th International Invention Exhibition in Geneva in April this year; the research results were published in Nature Newsletter.
